Welcome to our February Newsletter.

Safehouse & Caring Cloud
HCL are participating in a new pilot in partnership with Liverpool City Council which involves monitoring the temperature humidity and CO2 levels in older persons’ homes to identify any potential risks.

The first phase of the pilot is to install plug in safe boxes which contain sensors that pick up on the room temperature humidity and CO2 levels

These will be placed in homes where there is already a Lifeline in place; the safe box is not to replace the Lifeline sensors, it is there to run alongside it to monitor the reliability of the new equipment. The system is called Caring Cloud and going forward, it can be accessed via an app by family members or carers.

The lifeline telecare service is currently all analogue technology and will have to be replaced by digital technology by 2020, in a similar way to when analogue TVs all changed over to digital. 

By participating in this pilot we are testing new technology for the future and being innovative with a view to winning more contracts

If successful, we can add on sensors to detect movement or falls with a view to alerting us to identifying people at risk of falls, so another positive action that demonstrates HCL are supporting new initiatives in technology.

Mentors/Senior Care Workers
Here at HCL, we are looking to strengthen our team of Senior Care Workers/Mentors in all Localities. To qualify you must be have a Diploma Level 3 or equivalent in Health and Social Care or be prepared to complete the Diploma.

In tandem with this you must be interested in supporting new colleagues and be prepared to give feedback and coaching. If this is something that you might be interested in, please ring Kate 0151 737 2820 to find out more.

Staff Surveys
We are always interested in seeking feedback from our staff about how it feels to work at HCL and we have recenty run a survey with Survey Monkey in the Croxteth, West Derby and Knotty Ash Localities. Included in the questions we asked were do staff felt like they were kept updated about the people they support, do they feel they receive enough support for their own role from their managers, are staff satisfied with the hours they work and if they feel that HCL is a good place to work and if they would recommend us to a friend or relative.

We were very pleased that the majority of feedback was very positive with most carers feeling supported in their role and that HCL is a good place to work that they would recommend to others. Some staff did not feel as positive but all feedback from the survey is being shared with Locality Managers, including comments made in addition to the survey questions, allowing us to address any individual concerns.

Health & Wellbeing
HCL are planning a further Health and Wellbeing initiative and are awaiting dates from the Health First Team regarding dates etc.

Our Health and Well Being Champions are Phill Wonderley and Kate Murphy and we actively encourage all staff to contact Phill or Kate if they are interested in taking part in the programme and learning more about how to improve their diet, fitness and general health.

On the subject of improving Health and Well Being our very own Phill Wonderley is combining this with fund raising for the Rose Farley Appeal and is taking part in the Liverpool BTR half marathon on 25th March . Care Quality Commission (CQC)
CQC are currently inspecting Liverpool City Council (LCC) as they are responsible for Commissioning Care Services from Providers. HCL have been asked to support LCC with their inspection and CQC will be visiting HCL to discuss Care Services we provide on behalf of LCC through the current Help to Live at Home Contract. This is not a further inspection of HCL but is evidence of us supporting other partners to enable them to shape and plan the future of care services.

Investors in People (IIP)
HCL are proud to have achieved the Investors in People Award which we have held since 2012. IIP reassess companies every three years to ensure they are still achieving the standards required and we are due to be reassessed in March 2018.

A representative from IIP will visit the HCL offices and speak staff as part of the accreditation process and I hope to be able to provide an update in our March Newsletter.
